 PressReader Suffers Cyber-Attack. A cyber-attack on the world’s largest digital newspaper and magazine distributor left readers around the world unable to access more than 7000 publications. PressReader, headquartered in Vancouver, Canada, and has offices in Dublin, Ireland and Manila, Philippines, began experiencing a network outage affecting its Branded Editions website and apps and its PressReader site on Thursday.  The global outage impacted all PressReader’s local, regional and international newspapers and magazines online on mobile devices and in print. Users in countries including Australia, Canada, the UK and the US were blocked from accessing titles, including The Guardian, Vogue, Forbes, and the New York Times.  Canada Cops Arrests Teen Cyber-Attack Suspect. Police in Manitoba, Canada, have arrested an 18-year-old man on suspicion of carrying out cyber-attacks on victims across North America.  Dayne Parrott-Jones, of Brandon, was taken into custody on March 8 by members of the Brandon Police Service Crime Suppression Unit following an 11-month investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and police forces in America and Canada. The teen is suspected of carrying out distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks with a co-conspirator based in San Antonio, Texas. It is alleged that third parties paid the pair to perform the attacks.  Parrot-Jones' girlfriend, 24-year-old Rolanda Chaske, who shares his home on Pacific Avenue, was also arrested, but not in connection with the alleged cyber-crimes.  Sergeant Brian Partridge said: "In April of 2021, Brandon Police Service was contacted by the FBI in Los Angeles about a pair of co-conspirators that were conducting cyber-attacks

Mandiant Discloses Critical Vulnerability Affecting Millions of IoT Devices

Today, Mandiant disclosed a critical risk vulnerability in coordination with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (“CISA”) that affects millions of IoT devices that use the ThroughTek “Kalay” network. This vulnerability, discovered by researchers on Mandiant’s Red Team in late 2020, would enable adversaries to remotely compromise victim IoT devices, resulting in the ability to listen to live audio, watch real time video data, and compromise device credentials for further attacks based on exposed device functionality. These further attacks could include actions that would allow an adversary to remotely control affected devices. At the time of writing this blog post, ThroughTek advertises having more than 83 million active devices and over 1.1 billion monthly connections on their platform. OnlyFans is going to block sexually explicit videos starting in October

OnlyFans is getting out of the pornography business. The company will prohibit users from posting any sexually explicit conduct, starting in October. Creators will still be allowed to post nude photos and videos, provided they’re consistent with OnlyFans’ policy, the company said Thursday. The changes are needed because of mounting pressure from banking partners and payment providers, according to the company. “In order to ensure the long-term sustainability of our platform, and the continue to host an inclusive community of creators and fans, we must evolve our content guidelines,” OnlyFans said. OnlyFans has attracted more than 130 million users by giving online creators a platform to charge their fans for photos and videos. Many of its most-popular creators post nude photos and videos, and it has been praised for giving sex workers a safer place to do their jobs. But sex work still has a stigma. FTC requests Facebook sell WhatsApp and Instagram in major antitrust case

The US Federal Trade Commission has re-filed its complaint against Facebook, arguing that the company should be broken up and forced to sell Instagram and WhatsApp. The revised complaint argues that Facebook has a monopoly over social networking in the US and argues that Facebook has looked to make it difficult for other companies to compete. The complaint is partly redacted, and the FTC’s filing asks that it is sealed for 10 days. The new case comes amid mounting scrutiny over the size and power of Facebook’s empire and how it has bought up competitors as they have grown. The case makes reference to an email from Mark Zuckerberg, sent in 2008, in which he said “it is better to buy than compete”. More than $90 million in cryptocurrency stolen after a top Japanese exchange is hacked

Japanese cryptocurrency exchange Liquid said Thursday it has been hit by a cyberattack that saw hackers make off with a reported $97 million worth of digital coins. Liquid said some of its digital currency wallets had been "compromised," and that hackers were transferring the assets to four different wallets. "We are currently investigating and will provide regular updates," Liquid tweeted. "In the meantime, deposits and withdrawals will be suspended." Liquid did not provide an estimate for the loss. It says it is regulated by Japan's Financial Services Agency. The watchdog was not immediately available for comment when contacted by CNBC. Elliptic, a blockchain analytics company, said its analysis showed that the hackers obtained about $97 million in cryptocurrencies. Why users shouldn’t worry about ads on Telegram ?

In a statement by Durov(Product manager of Telegram) , he said  in quote " I read an article that cautioned users from switching to Telegram from other apps, because "Telegram is going to introduce ads". This is misleading for at least 3 reasons: 1. There will be no ads in chats on Telegram. Users who rely on Telegram as a messaging app, not a social network, will never see ads. Private chats and group chats are and will always be ad-free. As I outlined in December, ads are being considered only in large one-to-many channels (like this one), which do not exist in any other messaging app. So users ditching older apps for Telegram won’t increase the number of ads in their lives. 2. User data will not be used to target ads. We believe that collecting private data from users to target ads the way WhatsApp-Facebook do is immoral. Court Orders Telegram To Block Pirated Movies, TV Shows and Music

A court has ordered Telegram to block access to pirated movies, TV shows and music following a lawsuit filed in Israel. Local anti-piracy group ZIRA complained that the messaging platform does not properly respond to takedown notices, contrary to Telegram's claims that it does. Telegram is now working with rightsholders to implement the injunction. Last November, the RIAA and MPAA nominated popular messenger app Telegram for inclusion on the USTR’s ‘notorious markets’ list, claiming that the platform doesn’t do enough to combat piracy. A month later, the EU added the service to its own ‘Counterfeit and Piracy Watch List’, noting that along with other social media platforms, Telegram “lags behind” in respect of efforts to combat piracy. This opinion is shared by Israel-based anti-piracy group ZIRA. Last year, ZIRA – which represents local media companies – took its complaints to court, hoping to force Telegram to take a more serious approach to infringement mitigation. #tg #telegram
