Here are the new Android Q features that Google announced

People were expecting the first Android Q  Beta to launch this week and Google has delivered (a bit later than anticipated). Contrary to previous years, Google is not starting with a “Developer Preview.” This is being called Android Q Beta 1. We’ve already talked a lot about the new features coming to Android Q, but Google has shared some details about the big ones in this beta. Privacy Protections As we’ve talked about previously, privacy is a big area of focus in Android Q. It’s the first thing Google brings up in their details about the update. Users have more control over when apps can get location with a new option for “Allow only while the app is in use.” You won’t have to worry about an app pinging your location in the background. Privacy is more than just location sharing. There are more controls for allowing apps to access shared files and new runtime permissions to control access to photos, videos, and audio. Apps must use the system...

Many Security Apps on Google Play Inefficient, Fake

Antivirus testing firm AV-Comparatives has analyzed 250 security applications for Android offered on Google Play and found that many of them either fail to detect threats or they are simply fake. The applications reviewed by AV-Comparatives were tested against 2,000 malicious and 100 clean APKs, totaling over 500,000 test runs. Unsurprisingly, the tests showed that the products of reputable security firms such as Avast, Bitdefender, ESET, F-Secure, G-Data, Kaspersky, McAfee, Sophos, Symantec, Tencent, Trend Micro and Trustwave can detect all malware. Overall, 70 products blocked over 80% of the malware samples and 80 products blocked over 30% with no false positives -- AV-Comparatives considers antiviruses that block less than 30% as being ineffective or unsafe. Android apps from 138 vendors were classified as inefficient due to detection rates of under 30% or due to many false positive detections. Some of the apps have been found to incorrectly implement third-party antima...

New flaws in 4G, 5G allow attackers to intercept calls and track phone locations

A group of academics have found three new security flaws in 4G and 5G, which they say can be used to intercept phone calls and track the locations of cell phone users. The findings are said to be the first time vulnerabilities have affected both 4G and the incoming 5G standard, which promises faster speeds and better security, particularly against law enforcement use of cell site simulators, known as “stingrays.” But the researchers say that their new attacks can defeat newer protections that were believed to make it more difficult to snoop on phone users. “Any person with a little knowledge of cellular paging protocols can carry out this attack,” said Syed Rafiul Hussain, one of the co-authors of the paper, told TechCrunch in an email. Hussain, along with Ninghui Li and Elisa Bertino at Purdue University, and Mitziu Echeverria and Omar Chowdhury at the University of Iowa are set to reveal their findings at the Network and Distributed System Security Sym...

leak: Inside Facebook's secret crisis meeting, where Zuck and Sheryl race to save social network's reputation

Privacy, encryption, vaccines, fake news, er, Messenger themes, uh, emojis? We have obtained a transcript of a secret crisis meeting held last week between top executives at Facebook, including CEO Mark Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg, hammering out a corporate response to the social network's non-stop rollercoaster of scandals. We present it here unedited. Mark Zuckerberg:  Hi everyone. So the reason I wanted us all here was to… so, last week, as you know, I gave an interview to some Harvard Law professor. So we all thought this was a good idea because he's not a journalist and wouldn't ask precise questions. [Murmurs of agreement] So I thought it went pretty well. But then I read coverage of it and it all centered on me not knowing about some product we have that has a camera in it, and it sits in people's lounges. So this headline reads: "We don't want a camera in everyone's living room, says bloke selling cameras in living rooms..." Unkn...

The Android Q Beta will include more smartphones than the Android P Beta

Android Q is right around the corner, as we expect the first developer preview for Android Q to be out in the coming days, based upon the timelines for the Android Pie Developer Preview. The Pixel-exclusive Developer Preview will then last for a couple of months, after which we expect the Android Q Beta program to take over, presumably at Google I/O 2019 which is on May 7, 2019. With the Android P Beta Program, Google opened up the possibility to run early previews of the next version of the Android OS to devices other than its own Nexus or Pixel line. This collaboration by Google with different OEMs allowed seven new devices to receive an Android P Beta, vastly facilitating developers in taking advantage of their existing devices to develop for the Android ecosystem, even if the device was not a Pixel. These seven devices were namely the Essential PH-1, Nokia 7 Plus, OnePlus 6, Oppo R15 Pro, Sony Xperia XZ2, Vivo X21 a...

Initial list of devices with LineageOS 16 support

LineageOS 16 based on Android Pie is here for the Xiaomi POCO F1, OnePlus 5/5T, Honor View 10, and more The custom ROM ecosystem is rather large and diverse, but if there’s one custom ROM that we could consider to be “the biggest” of them all, then that would be LineageOS. With almost 1.8 million active installs at the end of 2018, the project’s install base is definitely noteworthy but said success mainly harkens back to their legacy. LineageOS is the successor of the CyanogenMod project, which ended in late 2016 following the shifting focus of Cyanogen Inc. The project was first launched to the public with LineageOS 14.1, which was based on Android 7.1 Nougat and, by itself, was not much more than just a fork of the existing CyanogenMod 14.1 source code. It then started evolving and taking a slightly different path with LineageOS 15.1, based on Android 8.1 Oreo, maintaining their premise of a communit...

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7 Pro are the true successors of the Redmi Note 3

In this world of constant leaks, Xiaomi’s Indian launch event for the Redmi Note 7 caught us slightly off-guard. Leaks and information building up to the event indicated that Xiaomi would be launching two devices in India, but one of these devices would be sporting a 12MP dual rear camera setup instead of the 48MP rear camera as was seen on the Chinese Xiaomi Redmi Note7. This led us to believe that Xiaomi would be launching the Chinese Redmi Note 7 as the Redmi Note 7 Pro for India, since the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro with the 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor had not launched in China yet. By deferring the Chinese launch of the Pro variant and prioritizing India as the stage for the global launch of the device, Xiaomi sent out a clear message to its competition: Xiaomi really means business in India. The Redmi Note Dynasty Xiaomi’s Redmi lineup is the company’s most successful product lineup in India. In fact, Xiaomi sold 12 Million Redmi Not...

You Need to Know About Bitcoin Insurance

It’s a relatively new concept, but there’s a growing need for Bitcoin insurance. Despite having a rough year in 2018, Bitcoin’s value has reached incredible heights. As the worth goes up — or the potential for substantial increase exists — and a growing number of merchants accept it for transactions, there are more opportunities for things to go wrong and cause people to lose their investments. As a start, some hackers target cryptocurrency exchanges and orchestrate high-scale attacks that affect substantial segments of Bitcoin owners at once. Moreover, some cryptocurrency wallets are not as secure as they appear, and cybersecurity researchers have proved that through tests. Even though Bitcoin insurance has not been around for very long, it bears a resemblance to traditional forms of coverage you already know. For example, you should not buy it haphazardly and should always take care to understand the terms of a plan before finalizing your decision to...

Cloudflare – The bad, the worse and the ugly?

What is Cloudflare and why not to use Cloudflare! Cloudflare, the operator of the probably best-known content delivery network, is not only very popular with black copiers. Credit card fraudsters, phishing site operators, blackmailers and terrorists also like to use the services of the Californian company. Volker Rieck takes a closer look. In the USA, a large technology company is about to go public. Cloudflare from San Francisco wants to collect almost 3.5 billion dollars on the stock exchange in the first half of the year with the support of the investment bank Goldman Sachs. However, there are heavy shadows over Cloudflare. The spectrum of his customers ranges from credit card fraudsters and spammers to sites that operate copyright infringement as a business model and terrorist sites. Even US embargoes are undermined. 💡 What is Cloudflare? The service of Cloudflare is the supply of a content Delivery network (CDN) - also content distribution network called. That is ...
